Apple TV clearly a complete failure

I think it's horribly unfortunate that the apple TV has to be hacked using boxee etc to make it useful. Apple is really blowing it with this product. With the hacks it has been proven to be a really useful device, but they continue to sell the totally neutered version.

That's why I use a Mini instead.

Duly cataloged as Trivial Passenger-Seat Complaint: BS file, Exhibit A, tagged: "horribly unfortunate" in the humor section.

"Hacking" the ATV is merely adding programs to the OS (ATV runs a version of 10.4).

Unless your mini comes pre-configured to do all that you want it to, then you are "hacking" the mini.

That's a pretty silly argument. Even if the ATV weren't underpowered (which it is), you have to hack an ATV (hacks which can be broken by any Apple software dump) with a patchstick (or remove the drive) to get to the OS and do anything Apple doesn't let you do out of the box. I don't think anybody would consider simply installing software (Perian leaps to mind) on a Mini to be "hacking" it.

I'm late to the party but I'll chime in and say that I also love my ATV. I currently have over 2800 tv episodes and over 550 movies available to it in addition to my music and photos. My biggest challenge is storage. My first 1tb drive is full and the second is filling quickly.

I do think apple should open up to more codecs. The ipod started by being able to playback mp3 files which a user could rip on their own. The user would then be hooked and start buying from the itunes store. The ATV should work in the same way. Let the user playback their own files and when they need new shows and movies they will go to the itunes store.

I would like to know what "I have two Apple TV's, both of them stay in Xbox Media Center mode where they're useful." means. Grim, could you explain?

I'm being serious.

I do not believe it, but here goes.
Not needing another computer to stream files from
More standard video formats support in the default configuration
1080 24p input/output support
1080i input/output support (not upscaling 720p)
ATSC/QAM/NTSC tuner/recorder
Open browser from Apple
Space for a 3.5" hard drive

It seems to me that Apple only wants it to be a hard wired portal to iTunes or something that will give them their pizzo.

What I would really like to see is a website for swapping tv shows for the appletv. I know this is unlikely to happen because of legal issues but it would be sooo nice. I understand that tivo users have this luxury.

Xbox Media Center (XBMC) was ported to the Mac and AppleTV a few months ago. XBMC can be installed with ATV USB creator, which installs from a USB thumb drive. It takes about 2 mouse clicks and 10 minutes to create a disk image that will automatically install XBMC on your AppleTV
