Because people want something to satisfy their needs. The ATV is an interesting exercise, but falls short in many areas because of the designed in limitations.
Well the truth of the matter is that any product you buy is not going to completely fulfill your needs. You just have to balance the trade-off of price to benefit. Atv has limitations sure, but not so many that would prevent millions of people for buying it. And the people that whine about it not satisfying their needs are just that - whiners. Where is it written that Apple or any other company has to satisfy your needs? Don't like it? Just don't buy one.

Guitarist - It's not that a good debate is unpleasant for me. Actually, quite the opposite. The problem is that I slogged through this entire thread looking for one, and I didn't find one. Mostly a bunch of people complaining that Apple TV doesn't do this, and it doesn't do that, and the fanboys on the other side. A debate is two intelligently opposing viewpoints dealing with the same issue.

It's characteristic of the kind of discussion one would expect in a computer forum about a Home Theater appliance.

I also don't expect to see useful discussions of speakers, turntables, amplifiers, stereo equipment, in a computer forum. Most here talk about computer desktop speakers.

I also don't expect to find informed discussions about Mac computers in an Audiophile forum.

Microsoft updates Xbox 360 to stream 1080p. Microsoft has sold about 12 million units in the US. This is a huge installed base.

If Netflix adds the option, I think the Apple TV will officially dead and iTunes video has some massive competition.

I am not so sure. There were reportedly 6.5 million PS3 shipped units in the last quarter of 2009, almost as many as the whole installed base of ATV. So it is a small number compared to any of the gaming consoles that support streaming. I could not find any current sales numbers easily, but the ancient PS2 might be outselling the ATV. It was recently introduced in Brazil and a couple other markets. It is not really a competitive product since it will not stream (yet) but there were rumors that Sony is going to enable some functions on it to connect to the PSN.
