Nooooooo!
Get iPhone.
My advice.
While you didn't really give much of a try in answering the original question, I appreciate the sentiment towards wanting to help people make the best decision possible. So now is your chance to explain why the OP should go with an iPhone.
I'll do it for him
My wife and I each had HTC Eris for 2 years (they were hot stuff when they came out); never having had a smartphone, we loved them. Then my work gave me an iPhone 4. The difference is like night and day. Sure, they're comparable in specs such as processor speed and screen size, Google copied the iPhone, after all, but the OS and the software on the Apple just work better... a lot better.
With a smartphone, the overwhelming majority of the cost is for the 2 years of the data plan; the phone itself only represents a tiny part of it, so it doesn't make sense to base a decision on a phone costing a couple hundred dollars less, even if it's "free." You'll be living with it for at least two years, and paying through the nose for the data; you should pick the best phone you can.
Another advantage, if you have another spousal phone, an iPad or spousal iPad you can legally share software. Buy once, install four of five times.
Another advantage, it works well with a Mac.
Another advantage, there are a lot of iPhones out there with the same form factor, so there are a lot of inexpensive case, chargers, speakers and other accessories. This was really lacking on the Droid, the form factors and the OS versions are all over the place.
Did I mention the camera's great and iPhoto and iMovie are solid and easy to use.
All indication are that iOS6, one of Steve's last projects, is going be insanely great.
