Apple TV clearly a complete failure

Forrest,

Thanks for the links to Boxee. I have heard about it on the forum before but never investigated it.

It looks sweet. I am a hulu addict. Watched a video to create a patchstick. Easy peasy.

Thanks again.

I think it's horribly unfortunate that the apple TV has to be hacked using boxee etc to make it useful. Apple is really blowing it with this product. With the hacks it has been proven to be a really useful device, but they continue to sell the totally neutered version.

And to me, it seems like there is much greater development for other platforms.

:ohsnap:

A complete lack of actual numbers makes the story almost worthless.

I see why some people like it if they are iTunes customers and have a computer set up as a media center. I think it would get a lot more penetration if it had just a little more functionality.
What are you looking for?

But the Apple TV is still the slutty fat girl of the party... some people might "know" her, but they're not admitting they "know" her!

I know that slutty fat girl. I know Apple TV too. I like them both.

There. I admitted it.

And while we're at it...why not open up Apple TV to play more codecs?

Why?

I still don't know what it does.

I know what it does, but it seems like it does about a quarter of what similarly priced devices do.
Okay, I'll bite: Which are they and what do they do?

I have two Apple TV's, both of them stay in Xbox Media Center mode where they're useful.

I know many people who use MythTV and get a ton of functionality out of it. Personally I use Windows MCE and there's tons of apps for that as well. I often use iTunes on it to rent movies. Eventually I'll get an HDTV, but upgrading my MCE to have two HD tuners will cost me $80.

There's a few other devices out there, but I'm not that familiar with those.

Some friends of mine recently bought one and are absolutely thrilled with it. Just having their picture library as the screensaver on their big screen TV was worth it for them!

Ugh. . . one device negating every CFL purchase in their zip code for the last 5 years.
